KNOXVILLE, TN (Sept. 4, 2021) – The Knoxville-Oak Ridge Central Labor Council’s Labor Day Celebration will on Monday, Sept.6, 10:30 am to 2 pm, at Tyson Park. This event is a free, family-friendly event with food, activities and information for those seeking to improve wages and benefits for skilled laborers and the working classes.
This event is a rare opportunity to celebrate everyday workers who teach our children, construct our buildings, deliver our mail, collect our trash, clean and maintain our hospitals, schools and office buildings, and our creatives who keep our city running.
As should be expected, an important part of the labor council’s event of fun, food and festivities is some TCB (taking care of business). The local Labor Day Awards will be presented, and the guest speaker will be Vonda McDaniel, President of the Central Labor Council of Nashville and Middle Tennessee.
McDaniels is a graduate of TN State University and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, A. Philip Randolph Institute Nashville Chapter. She was recently appointed to the TN State Workforce Investment Board and serves as Vice-Chair of the Board for the Music City Center, and is a Co-Chair of the State Fed/CLC Advisory Committee. In 2013 she was elected and currently serves as President of the Central Labor Council of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, and was elected as a Vice-President to the national AFL-CIO Executive Council in October 2017.
Labor Day celebrations have been a time-honored tradition in cities across the country since the first in 1882. These events are to remind us of the historic struggles and the many advances that were made through unions and the work yet to be done to ensure that all people have access to a safe workplace, decent wages and are treated with dignity and respect. Worker’s rights.
The planned festivities include activities for children and teens, a mini trade fair with presentations from community partners, live performances by Jay Clark, raffles, free BBQ and more.
Members of unions and comment organizations are encouraged to bring their banners for the #PassTheProAct photo shoot.
A limited number of exclusive Labor Day t-shirts will be for sale until gone.
