The LGBTQ+ movement borrowed directly from the Civil Rights movement, and we’re paying it back. Donate to KnoxPride and we’ll match up to $1000 to Alcoa-Blount NAACP, Sleeves 4 Needs, and The Women LLC.
Alcoa, TN (June 7, 2020) – Blount County activist and Knox Pride chairman of Community Outreach Nathan Higdon issued the following statement on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community:
“It is said that history is written by the victors.
When the fight for LGBTQ+ equality left black and brown people behind, then we have to learn our history and tell it correctly. The modern LGBTQ+ rights movement directly borrowed from the Black Freedom Movement, and now it is time to pay it back.
To have PRIDE requires that we tell our history correctly. As part of a greater commitment to speak truth to the power of our LGBTQ+ history, we are directly investing in the future of Black and Brown communities in East Tennessee. The first step is a financial commitment:
- KnoxPride will be investing in our relationships with the following organizations: Alcoa-Blount NAACP, Sleeves 4 Needs, and The Women, LLC of Knoxville.
Beginning today (Sunday, June 7, 2020) through 11:59 pm on June 30th, KnoxPride will be matching donations up to $1000 per organization. ALL proceeds raised will be split between the three organizations. As we move forward this month, we will share more information about the unique roles these organizations play in our community in the lives of LGBTQ+ and Black and Brown people in East Tennessee, along with actionable ways we will work alongside and support the Black Lives Matter movement in our community.”
Donations can be made at www.KnoxPride.com, via PayPal, Venmo; or send a check to KnoxPride, P.O. Box 30315, Knoxville, TN 37930. Contact Community OUTreach chair, Nathan Higdon at Nathan@KnoxPride.com for more information or corporate partnerships.”
